Baking is a skill I don’t have and one I learned the hard way that I shouldn’t attempt.
Time and time again, my small alterations and rough measurements don’t turn out, and, time and time again, I’m left perplexed as to why.
Thankfully, Betty Crocker and her excellent cake mixes entered my life just in time for a slew of events food needed to be brought to.
My mother and I walked down Metro’s baking aisle with my stressed rambling acting as background noise for the choice at hand. She ignored my words and walked towards the boxed cake mix, picking up both frosting and vanilla cake mix, passing them to me as she explained that I would put the cake mix into our casserole dish comparatively to how one would for brownies.
Though I didn’t believe it would turn out, I took both items into my hand without question.
Soon after we arrived home, I found myself in the kitchen, skimming the recipe and overall ignoring the instructions.
After taking the casserole cake out of the oven, I ignored my mother’s guidance and frosted it many hours before I was supposed to. As she suspected, the surface lifted and muddied the frosting, which was remedied by pouring miscellaneous sprinkles over the whole surface.
Though this was a relative success in my books, I cannot honestly say it looked good.
I did not want to bring my creation to my friend’s backyard for a gathering comprised largely of people I barely knew.
Logically, I knew I wouldn’t be ejected from the backyard, but logic did little to calm my senses.
What I was met with in the backyard put all my worries to rest, leaving me with a soft smile colouring my face as pleasantries were thrown at me alongside compliments for my baking far more genuine than it deserved.
As the night wrapped up, my cheeks were a tad sore after hours of smiling alongside such wonderful people I found myself wishing I knew better.

Instructions
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees fahrenheit or 180 degrees celsius and grease your casserole dish with cooking spray.
2. Crack 3 eggs into a small bowl and remove any egg shell pieces present.
3. Pour cake mix, vegetable oil, water, and three eggs into a medium sized bowl. Lightly mix for 30 seconds before beating vigorously for 2 minutes by hand.
4. Pour batter from bowl into greased casserole dish and put into preheated oven.
5. Set a timer for 15 minutes to start. Afterwards, continue to return every 10 minutes, so as to avoid burning the delectable creation at hand.
6. After removing the casserole cake from the oven, let sit for 90 minutes before frosting.
7. You will quickly notice that 90 minutes isn’t the appropriate amount of time to wait, as the surface of the cake will lift up and mix with the frosting. You will remedy this by finding various loose sprinkles in your cupboards and covering the entire surface of the casserole cake.
