- 2 cups warm water - 1 Tablespoon of active yeast - 1/4 cup honey or sugar (85g honey or 50g sugar) - 2 teaspoons table salt - 2 Tablespoons canola or vegetable oil - 4 - 5 1/2 cups all-purpose or bread flour
Step 1: Add water, yeast and a pinch of honey/sugar into a large bowl or stand mixer. Let sit for 5-10 mins until the mixture is foaming and bubbly, allowing the yeast to proof.
Step 2: Add remaining honey/sugar, salt, oil and 3 cups of flour. Fold to combine. While mixing, add ½ cups of flour until dough starts to pull away from the sides of the bowl.
Step 3: Knead dough for 5 mins. The dough should be smooth and elastic. It should stick to your finger, but not overly so.
Step 4: Grease a large bowl with oil or cooking spray, place dough inside and let rise in a warm place for about 1 ½ hours.
Step 5: Punch down dough to remove air bubbles within.
Step 6: Split dough into two loaves, place in two greased bread pans.
Step 7: Place cooking towel over bread pans, let rise for 45 mins to an hour.
Step 8: Preheat oven to 350℉, bake for 30-33 mins, or until golden brown on top. To test if ready, tap the loaf; it should sound hollow inside.
Step 9: Place loaves on a cooling rack, and coat the crust on top with butter.
Step 10: Let sit for 15 minutes to cool before slicing. After that, enjoy a slice with margarine, just like dad would make it.
