Out With The Old, In With The Fond(due)
Traditions have seemingly been one thing we all have in common—baking gingerbread, lighting candles, parades…ask anyone, and they’ll tell you theirs. I know mine has always been chocolate fondue on new years.
Every year for the last twelve(ish) years, my family and I have melted chocolate and dipped fruit, while wearing silly hats and watching the New York Square broadcast. At first it was a candle and a tiny pot, then a special plug-in fondue bowl. We’ve started playing at home escape rooms too, and we’ve tossed cookies and other small snacks into the mix.
I don’t know where this tradition came from, besides the barest of bones: once upon a time, my mother had a little girl, and thus was not able to go drinking. The solution? Chocolate. And it’s been like that ever since. When the tradition started, it was just my father, mother, and I. But now, I’m lucky to say that two younger brothers have joined us.
This year, when we were making the fondue, my brother Liam lost an apple slice in the pot (he does this every year), and panicked until my dad managed to fish it out. I had to convince my brother Shawn not to double dip, which he of course promptly forgot and or ignored, and I got chocolate all over my face.
It’s a nice way to celebrate the new year. We only do it once a year, and the sweet taste of chocolate and fruit reminds us to take time to enjoy the little things, and reminds us that even with half bitter ingredients, life can be sweet.
Something to look forward to and something to look back on, fondue is the perfect tradition for any family, no matter how big or small. If you have a microwave, you can make it. It’s cheap, it’s tasty, and, of course, it's fun. So treat yourself! Out with the old, in with the fond(due)!
