Recipe: “Beat together all ingredients except water. Cold water. Pour into greased 8” Square pan Bake at 350° F (180° C) or 30-35 Minutes.” - Great Grandmother
I entered my house and I first noticed the delicious smell of a cake being baked by my mom. My birthday is coming up and just like every year, my cake of choice is chocolate. I made my way to the kitchen where I found the cake sitting comfortably in the oven. The warm orange coloured lights reveal the deep brown texture of the cake. Just as I wanted. The recipe book was still on the table, opened to the page containing the instructions to bake a delicious chocolate cake. Out of curiosity, I took a look at the recipe even though I had never baked anything in my entire life. The recipe was written on a notepad page with a blue pen. Although the writing was in cursive, I was able to make out the title as “Grandma’s Chocolate Cake” meaning the recipe was my great grandmother's recipe. The recipe must be great if it is still being used to this day.
I chose this recipe because I thought it would have an interesting history because of how far back the recipe goes. After inquiring about the recipe, I learned that my great grandmother wrote down this recipe, along with many others for a cookbook which was given to my mom. Despite the recipe being given to my mom, it had been shared with the whole family. Just like my mom, everyone uses it as the go-to recipe. My Great Grandmother has since passed on however her recipe lives on to this day through her famous chocolate cake.
