really bad cupcakes

By: Kathryn Burns
When my sister and I were little, we desperately wanted more independence. So, we decided to bake a recipe of our own creation. We got a big bowl and took turns putting random ingredients in it. Things started out fairly normally-- we added milk, sugar, butter; we were actually on our way to make some decent cupcakes. Although after adding the first few ingredients,  things got … really weird. I added orange juice, my sister added saltines. I added yogurt, my sister added carrots. I added ketchup, my sister added peanut butter. We gave up trying to write everything down. Our cupcake batter looked horrendous like baby food or vomit …. but we put it in a pan and called our mom to help us with the oven. We set the timer and started to clean up.

When the timer finally went off, my mom opened the oven and the kitchen was filled with the most awful smell, like smoking ketchup and burnt crackers. My terrified little sister immediately burst into tears as the kitchen filled with smoke. The smoke detectors went off and I started crying with my hands clamped over my ears. My parents knew immediately they had to do something so my mom ushered us outside to take a walk while my dad took the steaming "cupcakes" and put them on the deck.

When we returned from our walk, the house still smelled awful and my sister went down to the basement to hide. I went out on the deck, where my dad was staring at our creation with disbelief. His eyes held a look of pure bewilderment.
"Have you tried one yet?" He asked.
    "No," I replied, "Have you?"
He shook his head, "Want to try one?"
I hesitantly broke off two pieces for us to try. He counted down from ten and we each took a bite. It was disgusting. I could mostly taste the saltines and the ketchup, it was so burnt I couldn't make out any other flavors. We threw out all the cupcakes and vowed never to make them again. From then on, my sister and I have always followed the recipe.

Recipe

INGREDIENTS:

Butter
Chocolate chips
Ketchup
Milk
Eggs
Peanut butter
Sugar
Vanilla
Banana

1. In a large bowl add…
  • 1 cup of butter
  • 1 cup of milk
  • ½ teaspoon of sugar
  • 2 spoonfuls of chocolate chips
  • 3 drops of vanilla
  • 1 drop of ketchup
  • 1 spoonful of peanut butter
  • whatever else you can grab from the cupboard

2. The batter should be beige. In another bowl, crack 3 eggs and beat lightly.

3. Cut 6 slices from a ripe banana and add 5 of them to the egg bowl, save the extra one for later.

4. Carefully pour the two bowls into a mixer and mix for 15 minutes.

5. In a new bowl add…
  • ½ teaspoon of sugar
  • the extra banana slice
  • 2 drops of ketchup

6. Add the bowl to the mixer and mix for 10 more minutes.

7. Place the batter in a cupcake pan and bake for 30 minutes at any temperature you'd like.

8. If it's not done baking after 30 minutes, put it back in the oven for another 5-10 minutes.

9. When the cupcakes are complete, place on a pan to cool for 10 minutes.

10. Enjoy a yummy secret private cupcake you made!
