By Mica ReadI don’t get to see my grandparents often. They live a couple provinces away, so being with them more than once or twice a year is rare. One of the things I look foreward to almost as much as seeing them, is the food. My Nan has a cookbook filled with recipes of her own, and ones from generations before, most of which she has been reworking to the point of perfection for several decades. The recipe I look forward to eating the most, by far, is one she lovingly calls, “Mom’s Spaghetti (Sauce)”. This is one of the many recipes that her own mom, my great-grandmother, passed down to her, which she then passed down to the rest of our family. My mom always described it as one of her favourite meals growing up. She’d tell stories about how her and her brother would eat it so much that they would practically go into a food induced coma. For me one of my favourite memories is making it with my mom. A single pot could feed our entire family for at lest two meals, and usually we’d still have some left over. Me and my brothers used to coat our sauce in Parmesan (much to my father’s disgust) and have races to see who could finish their’s the quickest. We certainly don’t play with our food as often anymore, but the feeling of nostalgia that comes with the sauce has stuck with me through the years, and not just because of the stains it left on my clothes. I chose to make it, because if there’s anything my Nan and this recipe have taught me, it’s that spaghetti is only as good as the sauce you put on it. So take the time, turn on “Lose Yourself” by Eminem (optional), and make “Mom’s Spaghetti (Sauce)”. |
