The Story Of Swedlove CookiesBy Isabelle Swedlove
Maybe, she thought, maybe I could’ve taken up a different hobby. But she didn’t. She chose to bake. It wasn’t too long ago, yet I was still only a dream. I hadn’t been born -- but the world was still rotating and people still had things to do -- when one day a child was born, his name was Joshua. My father was born into the world yet to know how he would change the life of his mother. Every day at the break of dawn she would make him a new snack, hoping one would stick, and he would fall head over heels. Hoping one would slap him across the face and make him fall in love with her baking. But if she was being honest with herself, she had no experience with baking, no knowledge of which ingredients mixed with what. Maybe the baby was right, her cooking was absolutely horrible. Maybe it was the false hope that she might find something he would enjoy. It wasn’t until a rainy day in May that the boy didn’t spit out the snack of the day. Instead he went for more, slowly, cautiously. But then he spat it out again. But this was progress, his mother thought. The chocolate chip cookies are progressing. So she worked day and night perfecting the perfect recipe for the ooey gooey chocolate chip cookies. Each day the boy ate more and spat less, until one day he finished it all without spitting a single piece from his mouth. The mother and father looked at their child with wonder -- he finally enjoyed her baking. The mother ran back to her working station hoping she hadn’t forgotten every detail of the recipe. She scribbled down notes on a spare napkin, ripping through the thin tissue. But her memory was slowly fading. She scrambled to find another surface to write her recipe on, but to no avail. All she needed was the last ingredient -- she couldn’t remember how many chocolate chips. So the next day as a reward to the boy for helping his mother learn to bake, he helped bake another batch of cookies. They followed the messy recipe that had been written on the napkin and landed on the last step, the chocolate chips. The boy waited patiently for his mother to tell him how much to put but she didn’t know either. So the boy reached into the bag of chocolate chips with two hands and pulled out a mound of chocolate chips. The mother laughed at how silly her son was and grabbed a piece of paper writing down the final step to her recipe. Finally add a mountain of chocolate chips. |
4. Add a mountain of chocolate chips and mix just until flour is fully incorporated and chips are mixed into dough. Drop by heaping teaspoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheets.
5. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until lightly browned. Let cool on sheets for a minute and then transfer to a wire rack to fully cool. |
